When should you clean your gutters? The quick answer – in the fall, after the leaves have dropped. However, if they have not been cleaned in a while and they are full to the point that they do not drain, the the best answer is -it’s time to clean them right now.
Some will suggest you should clean them twice a year. That answer largely depends on how many and what type of trees you have in your yard. Most likely, if you’ve cleaned them in the fall after the leaves have fallen then very little debris has accumulated. Certainly not enough to prevent good flow. If your property has a lot of trees and/or pines then it may be necessary to have them cleaned in spring and fall.
So how do you know if they need to be cleaned right now. Take a look at them when there is a good downpour. Water should be flowing freely at the ground of the downspout. If you see water coming out over the top of your gutters at any place, then there is a clog.
Why should you want your gutters to be clean and flow smoothly? They serve to control the flow of rainwater to protect your roof, walls, foundation and landscape. But when neglected, experts say gutters can turn from a necessity to a nightmare. A gutter clogged with leaves, sticks and other debris can cause a leaky roof or water damage to the interior or exterior of your home.
